Anxiety & Depression FAQ&A

Hey there ūüôā As you may or may not know, I’ve been fighting anxiety and depression for 9 months now. I thought I’d do a little ‘frequently asked questions’ post to hopefully help some of you if you’re going through the same thing, if you know someone who is, or if you’re just curious and would like to know more about the subject.   • How do you know you have anxiety & depression?¬†Depression is generally categorised as experiencing extended periods of low energy and mood, as well as a loss of pleasure in many activities. Anxiety is defined as experiencing unpleasant feelings of fear and worry, often inexplicably. Although it’s totally normal to have these emotions from time to time, if physical and emotional symptoms persist, you might want to talk to someone about it. There are many different types of anxiety disorder, but they can commonly be connected with depression.
  • What are some common symptoms?¬†Symptoms of depression that I’ve personally experienced include; loss in appetite, headaches, crying, fatigue, nostalgia, sadness, concentration and memory difficulties. Other common symptoms are; sleep disorders, weight loss/gain. In terms of anxiety, I’ve experienced; anxiety/panic attacks, restlessness, nightmares, muscle tension, sensitivity to loud sudden noises or conflict. Cheery huh?
  • Can’t you just tell yourself to cheer up?¬†There are people who have it worse¬†than you, you know.¬†Fyi, this is not the best thing to say to someone with a mental illness. Being depressed is not the same as “just being sad”, you can’t just snap yourself out of it, and that’s one of the most frustrating things.
  • If I’ve got anxiety & depression, does it mean I’m weak?¬†Not at all, you should never think that. It’s true that not everyone suffers with mental illnesses but it is not your fault if you do. It’s a legitimate illness, you wouldn’t tell someone with a broken leg to stop being weak and shake it off right? It’s the same with your brain.
  • Why does it only affect certain people?¬†There are many reasons why people can become affected by anxiety and depression. Genes can play a large role (this is definitely a factor in my case). Obviously if you have just experienced a traumatic event or have a large amount of stress, then you can be more vulnerable to these sorts of things.
  • What feels worse: anxiety or depression?¬†I think about this question quite a lot. Recently I’ve been feeling quite down and it really really sucks, believe me. At the same time, it’s also so hard to be constantly tense and frightened, especially if you can’t explain why. I would have to say that both are as bad as each other. I wouldn’t wish either on my worst enemy (not that I really have one).
  • What should I do if I think I/someone I know may be suffering from this?¬†Talk to someone. A parent, sibling, friend, teacher, school councillor, anyone. Trust me, it may seem daunting but it is so important not to leave these things bottled up inside. Know that you are not alone, and you’re not weird either, anxiety and depression is very common believe me. If you suspect that someone you know may be struggling with this, try to talk to them gently and show them that you care. If they are having thoughts or planning on harming themselves or anyone else please please tell someone. There is help and hope out there.
